Hugh Alley presented this ‘little booke’ of drawings of the City’s markets to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of London with a strong recommendation that the existing regulation of the markets should be more stringently enforced.  The drawings show a unique picture of street life of the period and provides hitherto unknown topographical information, discussed in detailed notes on each plate.  The editors’ introduction outlines the history of food marketing in London and examines the background to Hugh Alley’s self-appointed crusade.
